Israel and Identity Building: Educating American Jews About Israel

This article examines the role of Israel in American Jewish identity formation. The author observes that American Jews are deeply attached to Israel on an emotional level, yet detached on cognitive and behavioral levels. He argues that Israelis and Americans should cultivate American connections to Israel in both the emotional and behavioral realms. This article appeared in the "Israel at 50" issue of The Reconstructionist (Spring 1998).
