Israeli Women's Social Change Organizations

Below (in alphabetical order) are some of the organizations in Israel doing significant work around women's issues. For more information on the background and activities of each organization, see the list of grantees on the New Israel Fund website.

After reading through this list, find women's social change organizations in your area. Interview representatives of three different organizations in your community.
  • What are the most pressing needs of women in your community?
  • How are the social change organizations responding to those needs in ways that government institutions are not?

AL-ZAHRAA: (Palestinian Arab Women’s Organization)

Goals: To advance the status of women in Arab society, particularly in Sakhnin and the surrounding region; to promote the integration of Arab women into Israeli society; and to encourage women to pursue higher education.

ASSOCIATION OF RAPE CRISIS CENTERS IN ISRAEL

Goals: To reduce the level of sexual violence; to increase the scope of services and state funding provided for the victims of sexual assault; and to improve the legal and public status of the victims of sexual assault.

CLAF: COMMUNITY OF FEMINIST LESBIANS

Goals: To advance the status of lesbian women in Israel.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN

Goals: To reduce the social and economic gaps in Israel through economic empowerment of low-income women.

ISHA L'ISHA (Woman to Woman)

Goals: To advance the status of women, and to promote women's equality in Israeli society.

ISRAEL WOMEN'S NETWORK

Goals: To improve the status of women, to attain equality between the sexes and create a more just and equal society through leadership development and advancing women in the work place.

KOL HA-ISHA: JERUSALEM WOMEN'S CENTER

Goals: To create a culture of peace and solidarity of women that crosses boundaries of class, ethnic background, religion, and nationality. Its mission is to develop and promote a feminist, multicultural model of social change; to address the individual needs of all women; and to foster a feminist paradigm for an authentic and collaborative peace.

LAGIYA: ASSOCIATION FOR IMPROVEMENT OF THE STATUS OF WOMEN

Goals: To improve the status of Bedouin women in Israeli society and their own community.

MAVOI SATUM (Dead End)

Goals: To advance the status of agunot (women who are refused a divorce).

ONE-IN-NINE: WOMEN FOR WOMEN WITH CANCER

Goals: To improve the situation for women with breast cancer.

SISTER FOR WOMEN IN ISRAEL

Goals: To improve and advance the status of working women at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder; to focus public attention on the issue of working women; and to promote a feminist perspective among working women based on their specific experience of being treated as cheap labor.

WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE

Goals: To eliminate physical, sexual and psychological violence against women in the Arab community.

WOMEN LAWYERS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

Goals: (1) to fight the widening gaps in Israeli society, particularly the growing violation of women's rights; (2) to strengthen feminist discourse in Israeli society in general, and in the legal arena in particular; (3) to serve as a model for feminist organizations of women in other professions.
