Bar/BatMitzvah Chapter

From the third volume of A Guide to Jewish Practice: The Life Cycle, edited by David A. Teutsch, Ph.D., this chapter on Bar and Bat Mitzvah starts by tracing the fascinating history of an event that began in the medieval era and now dominates much of American Jewish life. The main text, by Rabbis Joshua Lesser and Deborah Waxman, covers everything from the setting, tutoring and rituals to party planning, with an emphasis on values throughout. Adult ceremonies, becoming more common, are also discussed. As with the first two volumes in the series—Everyday Living and Shabbat and the Holidays—multiple Reconstructionist thinkers add commentaries at the bottom of every page. This enlivens the text and offers an array of ideas from which readers can choose.
