The Emergency and Disaster Administration said the death toll from the quake that struck the mountainous Van province near the Iranian border stood at 471, with 1,650 people injured. The Turkish government has put out requests to 30 countries, including Israel, for emergency materials including prefabricated housing, tents and containers. Israel immediately responded with launching an airlift of supplies today. According to Reuters, an estimated 600,000 people have been affected by the disaster.

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is in contact with the Jewish Community in Turkey and the International Blue Crescent and is sending heat lamps to 1,000 families as the cold weather is approaching.
